Dear Parents of Kindergarten to Grade Five Students,

Reading is an essential part of the learning process. With the advancements in technology and the current trends in education, reading has evolved from traditional printed materials to digital learning resources.

Research shows that students who do not read during the summer lose at least two months of literacy development. Students who do not engage in reading or any learning activity during the summer may experience ‘the summer slide’ or the ‘summer reading loss’.

In order to bridge the reading gap, schools provide a summer reading program to help learners develop their reading skills to gain proficiency in reading.

To make students stay on track, the Learning Resource Center has prepared a list of recommended readings which include both print and online resources to provide you with wider options in order to maintain or develop literacy skills acquired in school.

Here are some guide questions that you can ask your child after reading:

What was your favorite part of the book? Why did you like that part?
Does this book remind you of something you experienced, read, or seen? What does it remind you of?
Did you learn anything from this book? What important value/s did you learn from the book?

Attached are the list of suggested titles and a reading log to help you keep track or monitor your child’s reading.
