On Friday, July 30, 2021, award winning host and certified animal lover Kuya Kim Atienza treated the Grade 3 and 4 Xavier School Nuvali (XSN) students to a special Show and Tell featuring his own domesticated pets.
In the virtual Zoom talk arranged by the Xavier School Parents Association - Nuvali (XSPA-N) and the XSN Science Department, Kuya Kim emphasized the importance of protecting the Philippines’ Animal Biodiversity because species are quickly becoming extinct. He hoped to inspire the children to conserve and to protect animals. He also pointed out that wild animals should be left in the wild because when a species dies, the whole cycle of nature is affected.
Kuya Kim first introduced his pets from the bird family: an African Love Bird and a Green-Winged Macaw. He then showed members from the lizard family: an iguana and a water monitor, locally known as the bayawak. Kuya Kim also brought out a tortoise from Madagascar and two types of snakes: a ball python and a boa constrictor. Finally, he introduced one of his many furries -- a beagle. To the children’s delight, he also gave a close up of a shark’s tooth!
Afterwards, many intrigued students had the opportunity to ask Kuya Kim their questions. Qian Jin Lu from Grade 3C asked Kuya Kim about his challenges in caring for the animals. He shared that when he began in the 90s, it was still hard to research and find reliable information about how to make the animals thrive and be happy without the internet.
Lila Flestado from Grade 4C and Science Department Chair, Mrs. Maria Glofelsa Quiambao closed the talk with words of amazement and appreciation.
Kuya Kim left the students with encouraging words -- “Preserve, conserve, and love animals. It’s good for humans as well.”
Those interested in viewing the recording of the virtual talk may watch it in the school's official YouTube channel.
